Code of Conduct
OAM Code of Conduct
OAM aims to provide food and love to Welland and the Niagara Region. Organizations are responsible for anything done in their name regardless of remuneration. Thus, any ambassador acting on behalf of OAM is projecting an image of OAM to the community whether they are a paid or unpaid worker. Therefore, the actions of volunteers, co-op students, and persons completing community service hours are detrimental to both OAM’s reputation and to the hearts and minds of the community members seeking OAM’s services. Given the nature of informal, seasonal, and project-based volunteering at OAM, there may be an inherent paradox in promoting standards of practice, protocols, policies and procedures. As we better understand how volunteering is influenced by these trends, our challenge is to create the infrastructure needed to facilitate OAM’s ethos throughout our volunteer community. We do not want to create a list of legalistic rules that will be neither inclusive nor generative of our values. But we do want to deter actions out of sync with our values being evidenced by our ambassadors.
Therefore Open Arms Mission has the following expectations regarding Code of Conduct for all persons performing duties for OAM:
- All persons performing duties for OAM must serve the community in a manner that offers dignity to customers, donors, and other affiliates of the organization.
- Derogatory language of any kind is not to be used when acting as an ambassador of OAM.
- All persons performing duties for OAM must maintain confidentiality of customers, employees, and other volunteers.
- Illicit drugs and/or alcohol are not to be consumed while performing duties for OAM. Further, a person under their influence is not to perform duties as an affiliate of OAM while
affected by these substances.
- Further case-by-case considerations can be discussed with management as appropriate.
OAM is thankful for volunteers, students, and other unpaid workers. We could not function without you! With the exception of matters related to compensation, most policies apply equally to everyone in areas such as training and supervision, evaluation, confidentiality, harassment, inclusivity, conflict of interest, screening, and duty of care. That is, OAM endeavours to care well for its volunteers, students, and other unpaid workers, just as it endeavours to care well for its paid employees. If you have questions regarding your position and expectations here, please speak with management.
